THE UNICORN

The unicorn is a legendary creature usually depicted with the body of a horse, but with a single, usually spiral, horn growing out of its forehead. The unicorn's blood and horn supposedly have mystical healing properties. A unicorns horn also is known as the "bane of evil" in that it has the ability to dispel anything malignant in water and can also kill most truly evil creatures it comes in to contact with. Naturally Kings sought after cups made from this horn so they could enjoy a poison free meal.
It was actually believed that the first Unicorn was in fact a goat, but through out the ages, the legends and depictions became blurred and so the four legged creature in turn became the white single horned horse it is today.

Traditionally the unicorn is said to be an extinct mythical animal as the original tale that surrounds it goes. Unicorns once roamed freely before humans discovered the uses of their horns. The unicorns were near enough impossible to catch and skewered anyone who would try with their horn so a method was devised. A huntsman would stand in front of a tree and bait the unicorn who would then charge at him and become stuck in the wood (if the huntsman was fast enough.

The horn was then sawed off leaving the unicorn defenceless to natural predators or they were killed on the spot. Of course this wasn't the safest of methods and many men died until one day a man took his young daughter to the hunt and found the unicorn came straight to her and lay down in her lap, allowing the hunter to saw off it's horn. Thus the secret was broadcast and the unicorns were wiped out.

About the Design

The Adventures of Tintin is a series of comic strips created by the Belgian artist Georges Rémi (1907–1983), who wrote under the pen name of Hergé. The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtième on 10 January 1929. The success of the series saw the strips collected into a series of twenty-four albums, spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
Set during the 20th century, the hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful dog Snowy. Later, popular additions to the cast included Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and other supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson. Hergé himself features in several of the comics as a background character.
The images on each face of this coin have been taken from the original artworks created by Georges Rémi (Hergé). New Zealand Mint is proud to bring you this coin direct from France as work on a new Tintin movie commences here in New Zealand.

Sailing into collectable history is our tribute to the centenary of the Titanic.  This is great news for lovers of marine history and Titanic aficionados.

It was the world’s most famous passenger ship disaster.  On a cold, moonless night just before midnight, the ‘unsinkable’ RMS Titanic struck an iceberg.

Moments before impact, lookout Frederick Fleet peered into the darkness in horror at the approach of a menacing black shape. With the icy monolith just yards away, his alarm initiated frantic efforts to slow the ship and change course. They proved fruitless. Over the next few hours, an estimated 1,517 doomed souls met their watery fate in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic.

The grave of RMS Titanic, resting deep in the North Atlantic, remains a memorial to those that lost their lives, and a testament to those who bore the lifelong sorrow of that loss.

The Black Rhinoceros is characterised by its sizeable frame and distinctive horns.  This magnificent species is thought to have poor sight, but a good sense of smell and hearing, and is believed to live between 40 to 50 years of age.

Over time, the poaching of the animal for its horns has escalated and remains the creature’s greatest threat.  The Black Rhinoceros is classified as critically endangered, and one subspecies, the Western Black Rhinoceros, was declared extinct by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 2011.

Political instability and wars have also severely hampered rhinoceros conservation work in Africa.  This situation has exacerbated the trade in rhino horn and increased incidents of poverty-induced poaching.  Habitat loss and changes have also contributed to the population’s decline.  It is now more important than ever to safeguard the future of this unique species.
